Chairman Outlines Fire Commission Areas of Interest A determination of the “weakness in the overall system of fire prevention and control” so that improvements can be suggested is one of the objectives of the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control, Richard D. Bland, chairman, declared at a recent commission meeting. More specifically, Bland said that the commission is studying fires in nursing homes and one and two-family dwellings. He pointed out that many persons have died in nursing home fires and “as much as 80 percent of the life loss is in one and two-family dwellings.” Also, Bland commented, about “30 percent of the annual dollar loss” is in residential fires. Concerned about clothing The commission chairman voiced concern that some “firemen’s protective clothing does not approach the proposed standards for children’s sleepwear under the Flammable Fabrics Act.
