First Grad in Bay State Howard Ferguson, a permanent full-time fire fighter in the Norton, Mass., Fire Department, was the first man in the State of Massachusetts to receive an associate degree in fire science technology. He was awarded the degree from Massasoit Community College in West Bridgewater last June. Ferguson estimates that he has traveled about 25,000 miles in the past three years to meet the requirements for the degree. To get the required courses, he has had to attend sessions at Roger Williams College, Rhode Island Junior College and Bristol Community College evenings and summers while putting in a 50-hour week as a fire fighter in Norton. He also took a course at North Shore Community College in Beverly.
