Four-City Use of Fire Academy Results in Better Training Bellevue, Wash., Fire Department photos The training academy described in this article came to being not by accident nor a chain of events, but rather by design. Every year, thousands of young men are recruited into the fire service. Some of them, fortunately, into large departments where they receive recruit training in a well-established training academy. The majority of these men, however, are appointed to smaller departments and are assigned directly to regular company duty where their training will be given “in service.” Unless their company officers have the talent to properly instruct these men, their training will be on a hit and miss basis. This remark may make a few people wince, but let’s face it, if the shoe fits—wear it. The solution to this problem for many departments would be the consolidation of their training program.
