Fire Prevention Promoted by Volunteer Unit Dan McCarthy photos. In September 1971 a group of four, including myself, bought a 1937 American LaFrance 500-gpm pumper as an antique. During the winter, the truck was put into condition and the idea to do some good was developed. The four of us discussed worthwhile use of the apparatus and we decided on fire prevention work. The first use of the pumper was in a fire prevention show sponsored by the Woodmere-Hewlett Public Library in cooperation with the Woodmere and Hewlett Fire Departments on Long Island, N.Y. The truck, with fire prevention signs on it, was displayed next to a modem Hewlett apparatus. The program was so well received that Hewlett invited us and the apparatus to participate in a Fire Prevention Week open house at its headquarters.
