But, like the weather, everybody talks about it, few people do anything. As the daughter of a fireman, fire safety was part of my growing up. I was conscious of fire hazards and along with Nancy Drew mysteries, I was an avid reader of Fire Engineering. So wherever I am teaching, I do something for Fire Prevention Week, even if it’s just hanging a poster in the hall. Several years ago, I decided we ought to do more than hanging posters or doing bulletin boards, so I talked with Louis Scuteri, principal of the Glen Cove, N.Y., Middle School, and he gave me permission to plan a more extensive program.
