How rapidly can some training in pump operation be provided when a county suddenly expands from one fully-paid and three independent volunteer fire stations to an integrated, 11-station, combination paid-volunteer fire department. The answer was provided by the Kentucky Fire Service Training Program of the Bureau of Vocational Education when it recently conducted a two-day pump short course for members of the Daviess County Fire Department. Through a bond issue, the Daviess County government built 11 fire stations, and purchased one airport crash truck, three 1000-gpm pumpers, and eight 750-gpm pumpers. All but the crash unit were supplied by Pierce Manufacturing, Inc. On the first day of the pump course, 96 fire fighters attended classroom sessions at the Daviess County Area Vocational Technical School.
