1974 Fire Losses The dollar value of property destroyed by fire in the United States reached a new high of $3.2 billion in 1974, an increase of some $551 million, or 21 percent, above the 1973 total of $2.6 billion, it was reported by the Insurance Services Office. December fire losses were a record high of $298 million, a 23 percent increase over the December 1973 figure of $242 million.
