Letters to the Editor DEPARTMENTS Double Cylinder Locks Birmingham, Mich. The tragic death of four persons in Michigan a few short days ago should not have happened. It was caused by a barrier being placed in the path of exit from a home. The barrier was a double cylinder lock on the front door. To leave the home they needed a key to open the lock from inside. When this lock was placed in the door, it was intended to provide security from intruders who would remove articles of value and safety to those inside. The fire service of Michigan is very concerned about this so-called security. We appreciate that those who advocate this locking device believe they are providing a needed service to the homeowner. We believe that to lock a person in any area where fire is possible is misguided security. People in case of fire must be…
