Fiber-glass Pipe Installed At Wood Products Plant One of the first approved applications in the United States of fiber-glass composite pipe for a fire protection line was installed recently in Mobile, Ala. Almost 900 feet of fiber-glass pipe was entrenched at the Crown Zellerbach Treated Wood Products plant, to provide yard protection for acres of utility poles. The poles, cut 30 to 90 feet long, are pressuretreated with creosote and pentacholorophenol, for use as utility poles and pilings. The fire lines are supplied from a nearby 750,000-gallon-pond. Water is pumped through 8-inch pipe by a 220-volt-pump at 1000-gpm and linked to three hydrants with 6-inch pipe. Each hydrant is a twoway unit with an independent gate valve. Hoses, nozzles, and other fire control equipment are also housed at the hydrant boxes.
