NBS Takes Fire Survey The National Bureau of Standards completed a survey on selected fire protection engineering topics. The survey, which was sent to 422 persons from every state and major city in the United States and parts of Canada, had a 46.2 percent return rate which is more than double the national average. The survey population included architects, engineers, insurance and government representatives, academics and fire service personnel. The questionnaire covered such topics as the adequacy of the term “noncombustible” as contained in the National Fire Protection Association’s National Fire Code, hazards of fire loading concepts, code regulation and enforcement , furnishings, sprinkler systems and smoke detectors. While this survey does not represent a statistical approach, it is an attempt to gather and document professional thinking on fire protection matters, with the intent of determining indications of future trends.
