New Station in Tempe, Ariz. The new Station 3 of the Tempe, Ariz., Fire Department has some unusual architectural features. The two-story station has two drivethrough bays and a center bay that has a locker and hose storage area on the end toward an exterior hose tower. The shape of the station, on McClintock Drive near Baseline Road, was influenced by the irregular triangular plot. At night, lighting glows through translucent plastic skylights and outlines the unique roof lines. Corridors were eliminated to save space and money. On both the first and second floors, there is informal passage from one use area to another. The first floor has a watch station that guards the station entrance and also looks out on the apparatus floor.
