Water Bed Emergency

Issue 11 and Volume 129.

Water Bed Emergency Ventura, Calif., fire fighters received a call last August 19 to remove a 1700-pound water bed from a resident, Mrs. Eleanor Youngston. They weren’t quite sure what happened, but this was their best version: It seemed that somewhere around 6 a.m., Mrs. Youngston was in the bed a standard model with a raised frame when for some reason the water shifted, bouncing her on to the floor and the mattress on top of her. Her husband was unable to lift it and rather than drain it, called the fire department. Fire fighters removed it from her and she came out gasping, but otherwise unhurt. Never having responded to a water bed emergency before, they listed it as “an unusual incident.”
