An incendiary fire sweeping through a three-story mercantile and apartment building was confined by Chatham, N.Y., volunteer fire fighters before it could turn into a conflagration such as the one in 1898 that wiped out the oneblock-long Main Street business district. An alarm for a fire at the Just For You Shop on Main Street was transmitted over the home radio monitor system at 1:56 a.m. last March 13. The shop was in one of the Victorian-style buildings that were constructed on the block after the fire in 1898. The buildings have stores on the ground floor and apartments on the second and third floors. The brick and wood-joist buildings run the length of the block without any fire walls, although there are double brick walls between buildings.
