Bit of Old With New Cuts Cost of 1000-GPM Pumper features When an annual service test of a 1952, 750-gpm pumper proved unsatisfactory, Chief John P. DeRoos of the Evergreen Park, Ill., Fire Department knew that a replacement was necessary. The route the chief took was a little different in that parts of the old pumper were placed on a new chassis. The total cost of obtaining a first-line, 1000-gpm pumper in this manner was $22,500, quite a saving for the taxpayers of Evergreen Park, a town of 26,000. Major renovations of the booster tank and cabinets of the old pumper had been made in the late 1960s, and the hose bed also was in excellent condition.
