3000-Gal. Tank on Pumper Gives All-Area Versatility When you have to provide fire protection for a 540-square-mile area that encompasses everything from densely populated urban areas and industrial parks to sparsely populated suburban districts, you face an unusual equipment demand. This is exactly the situation faced by the Metropolitan Dade County Fire & Rescue Department. The problem is compounded by the fact that the area it serves stretches some 55 miles from its most northern to its most southern point and covers a number of different political subdivisions. Some of these have small independent water companies which are occasionally forced to shut down water supply to hydrants. The Dade County department provides fire protection to suit these widely varying conditions with a staff of 738 fire fighters located in 30 stations spotted strategically throughout the area.
