NOW’S THE TIME TO FIX WHAT WE BROKE FIRE SERVICE EMS More and more trade journal articles, conference presentations, and national surveys are pointing to the importance and prevalence of emergency medical services (EMS) as a part of the fire service. Several such articles have been published in Fire Engineering in recent months. These articles also have explained that there is a fine line between quantity and quality —that is, just because the fire service is the most common EMS provider does not mean it is always the best EMS provider. Typically, that is because the fire service has kept itself from being the best. Simply put, the fire service, as a rule, has been a very inward-looking profession. Perhaps that is because we have always been called on to make snap decisions in crisis situations, without having the luxury of time to study the problems and ask tor opinions.…
