Aurora, IL BRK Brands Inc. is launching a carbon monoxide education and awareness campaign nationwide. The campaign will inform individuals and families about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to help protect against it.
“Many homeowners are conscious of fire dangers, which can be seen by the high number of smoke alarms installed in U.S. homes,” said Debbie Hanson, director of external affairs at BRK Brands Inc. “However, many of these homes are not protected against carbon monoxide poisoning. Nationally, only 40 percent of homes have a carbon monoxide alarm installed.”
An estimated 1,500 people die each year in the U.S. through unintentional carbon monoxide exposure and another 10,000-40,000 people seek medical attention from hospital emergency rooms for carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Over the next several months, BRK Brands, a manufacturer of First Alert(r) products, will provide the public with facts about carbon monoxide, sources of carbon monoxide, and tips on how to help guard against it, using various communication channels including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and community events.
More information on carbon monoxide, including a room-by-room safety audit and where to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home, can be found at www.firstalert.com.
