Arlington, VA – FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh announced today the first official affiliate program under President Bush’s Citizen Corps initiative. In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, FEMA and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) signed a partnership agreement to work together to raise public awareness about fire hazards. Together they will encourage communities to develop fire safety training and education initiatives for children and families through the Citizen Corps network of state and local councils.
Signed at Arlington County Fire Department’s Station Nine one of the first stations to respond to the Pentagon 9-11 attacks, the agreement adds NFPA as an affiliate to the five charter Citizen Corps programs: Neighborhood Watch, Volunteers in Police Service, Operation TIPS, Community Emergency Response Teams, and Medical Reserve Corps.
“Everyone can do something to spread the word about fire prevention, and the affiliation between Citizen Corps and the National Fire Protection Association will help bring that message to the American people,” Allbaugh said. “I look forward to working with NFPA and to expanding Citizen Corps’ network of affiliate organizations and programs to make our nation safer and more prepared than ever before.”
“This partnership will allow citizens to honor all those who serve in our emergency services by practicing fire prevention and better preparing for all disasters,” U.S. Fire Administrator R. David Paulison said, who signed the agreement on behalf of Director Allbaugh.
Issuing a call to service for all Americans to embrace the spirit of volunteerism, President Bush announced the creation of USA Freedom Corps in his State of the Union address in January. The President established Citizen Corps, a component of USA Freedom Corps, to provide people the opportunity to volunteer in a range of homeland security measures within their communities.
Citizen Corps’ mission is to harness the power of individual citizens through education, training, and volunteer opportunities to make communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to disasters of all kinds. FEMA is tasked with promoting and facilitating volunteer opportunities through Citizen Corps.
