Cardiac Science, Inc., a manufacturer of life-saving public access defibrillators, has formed a partnership through its Lancaster, PA-based distributor EMSC with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) whereby the Council will promote the adoption of the Powerheart(r) Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to its members nationwide. The partnership was officially launched at a luncheon on March 28 in Salt Lake City where NVFC members from 43 states attended.
Communities served by volunteer firefighters depend on them to be their first line of defense for many types of emergencies including fires, 911 emergency medical incidents, terrorist events, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, water rescue emergencies, and other general public service calls.
NVFC Department Members will receive special discount pricing and the NVFC will receive a $50 donation from each member purchase. Cardiac Science will also pay a department’s dues for one year if it is not a member of the NVFC with the caveat that it will join for an additional year.
In 2002, The United States Fire Administration (USFA) commissioned a comprehensive retrospective study which examined the causes of deaths for “on-duty” firefighters. The study found that of the more than 1,000 on-duty deaths in the last decade of the 20th century, the leading cause of death for firefighters was heart attack accounting for 44 percent of those fatalities.
