NY Volunteer Fire Company Expands Service With New Urban Wildland Interface Vehicle

The Malta Ridge (NY) Volunteer Fire Company (MRVFC) is pleased to announce the addition of an Urban Wildland Interface Vehicle, funded by the Town of Malta under recommendation of the Town’s Fire Protection Master Plan. The specialized vehicle is smaller, lighter, costs less to operate and is dually suited for rescue operations in rural areas as well as urban environments.

“This new vehicle will enable us to effectively reach areas we weren’t able to with our larger engine ladder and tanker vehicles,” said MRVFC Chief Pete Shaw. “We made a smart investment by purchasing a stock model from a local vendor for approximately 60 percent less than the cost of a typical full size fire engine. This not only saves us a significant amount of money, but also reduces the wear and tear on our larger equipment.”
“This vehicle is the one of the first in Saratoga County,” said MRVFC President Richard Jennings. “It’s only been here for a couple of weeks and we’ve already sent it to several Jaws of Life calls.”
“Last year we requested a master plan and feasibility study to review and analyze the fire resources in the Town of Malta,” said Malta Supervisor Paul Sausville. “Community safety and emergency preparation is a top priority, and we’re working hard to make sure our fire departments are adequately equipped to handle any call.”
The Urban Wildland Interface Vehicle has several new features that allow the fire company to:
  • Travel across farm fields and uneven terrain using four-wheel drive
  • Access developments around Saratoga Lake that have narrow, one lane unpaved roads
  • Pump water directly from Saratoga Lake if necessary since there are no fire hydrants
  • Better maneuver and access the Northway to improve response times to accidents
  • Respond faster to emergency calls requiring the Jaws of Life
  • Require less manpower to operate
