Firefighter, Two Others Injured in NY Apartment Fire

A firefighter and two other people were hospitalized after an apartment fire in Utica, New York. The fire began around 7 p.m. in the building’s 16th floor, which was undergoing renovations.

According to a news report, the firefighter went into cardiac arrest while operating at the scene. Another victim, a security guard at the apartment building, attempted to put out the fire and suffered second degree burns on his hands and face.

In the WKTV.com news report, Utica (NY) Fire Chief Russell Brooks discussed one of the major difficulties of the incident, namely that many residents of the involved apartments have physical or emotional disabilities, hampering evacuation efforts. One resident suffered a seizure in the lobby and was hospitalized.

The fire was contained to the top three floors of the structure, the 15th, 16th and 17th. Read more HERE.
