Fire Dynamics Technology Could Aid Firefighters

A report from ScienceDaily discussed technology developed by researchers at the University of Edinburgh that would allow firefighting crews to see how a structure fire is developing and spreading, thus allowing them to make more informed decisions about fire suppression and rescue opportunities.

Simple sensors incorporated into existing technology such as smoke alarms, closed-circuit television cameras, and the like could measure the temperature and height of a fire and then communicate this information to computers, which would model the fire behavior and give firefighters insight into how the fire is developing. The technology, called Sensor Assisted Fire Fighting, allows real-time observation of structure fires with constantly updated forecasting.
