On Friday, May 13, 2011, the Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security reported out their FY2012 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill, containing major cuts in State and local government programs.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program was funded at a level of $200 million from the current year FY 2011 level of $405 million. This represents over a 50% cut in the AFG equipment program. SAFER (hiring) grants were funded at $150 million, down 63% from its FY 2011 level of $405 million.
Please contact your Congressional Offices to encourage AFG and SAFER funding levels to be restored to their FY 2011 levels during the full Appropriations Committee mark up, scheduled for May 23, 2011.
As further background, other State and local programs, listed below, would be cut 50% below FY 2011 levels. These programs would be combined and funded under a $1 billion discretionary program administered by the Secretary of Homeland Security.
