Firefighters rescued some residents from a rooftop when an extra-alarm fire extended from the building of origin to two other homes in Berwyn, Illinois. One of the homes was vacant.
The early-morning fire spread from a two-story brick-and-wood house and flames leapt to neighboring structures, according to a Chicago Tribune report (http://trib.in/tcmTee), though there was no indication of what caused the fire to spread.
Four people were removed from a rooftop by ladder. Two people were taken to nearby hospitals to assess them for smoke inhalation.
The fire started in a residence that was converted into a rooming house, which reportedly had no smoke detectors or fire extinguishers.
