Detroit Apartment Fire That Injured Five Was Arson, Battalion Chief Says

An apartment fire that injured five people including a girl and a firefighter was arson, according to a Detroit battalion chief.

Battalion Chief No. 5 Doug Lyon talked to the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/GHgCDw) about the Tuesday night incident in which residents of the fifth, sixth, and seventh Chatham Apartments scrambled to escape the building’s smoke-filled corridors.

Five people in all were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, including a 7-year-old girl. All are expected to recover. The firefighter who was injured reportedly gave up his face mask to a woman he was trying to persuade to leave the structure.

An unidentified arsonist lit bags of trash afire on the fifth floor, Lyon told the paper.
