Asheville Making Changes After Internal Review

The Asheville Fire Department (NC) is going to add more commanders to handle major emergencies following an office building fire that killed a department captain a year ago, reports The Asheville Citizen-Times.

The additional supervisors will come from a staffing overhaul at the West Asheville Fire Station, taking it from two three-person crews to one four-person crew.

Fire Chief Scott Burnette said the change, while resulting in fewer firefighters stationed in West Asheville, does not put the public at risk. He said a four-person crew is more efficient.

Station 10 has a 97 percent reliability rate now, he said. By merging into one unit, the home unit arrival rate drops to 90 percent, which is the industry standard and citywide standard, Burnette said.

The changes come from a months-long internal review that will be released in August.
