Fire and ice made were a challenge for firefighters in several New England communities: Lowell, Lawrence and Barre (MA), reports NECN.com.
In Lowell, two fires broke out within hours of each other. The second fire of the day proved very stubborn. It took hours to extinguish and left behind a charred out old apartment building, icy streets and now four adults who have nowhere to go tonight.
Ice covered everything. Hoses were strewn about and firefighters fell victim.
”The fact that we had two fires going on at once, we were undermanned. Made things very difficult,” said Deputy Chief Jeff Winward.
Dep. Chief Jeff Winward says there a lot of different factors when it’s this cold.
With temperatures in the teens and the wind chill hovering around zero, this wasn’t an easy call for an already strapped Lowell Fire Department.
