What to See at FDIC 2013: Sixth Annual FDIC Courage and Valor Fun Run

The Sixth Annual Courage and Valor Fun Run is a 5K fun run/walk held on the Indianapolis downtown canal to raise awareness for the Ray Downey Courage and Valor Foundation as well as to bring firefighters, EMS providers, and the public together to have fun and support a great cause while getting some exercise at the same time. With each year, attendance has grown and the run has received wonderful feedback from participants and sponsors.

The event is held during the week of FDIC because the annual Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award is given during the FDIC Opening Ceremony. “The recipient usually participates in the 5K, which is held the day after the award ceremony, so it is a wonderful opportunity for others to meet that individual,” explains Sue Shepherd, run coordinator.

Shepherd has been attending FDIC in Indianapolis since 2000, when she was hired by the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department. The department has been involved in FDIC during all the years that Indianapolis has hosted it. Shepherd also attended the conference prior to its coming to Indy.

Shepherd’s advice for first-time attendees? “Pace yourself during the week. There is so much to do; you shouldn’t burn yourself out early in the week. Take classes during the day and then enjoy the great social events that FDIC and Indianapolis have to offer at night. Oh, and register for the Sixth Annual Courage and Valor 5K!”

Sixth Annual FDIC Courage and Valor Fun Run

Thursday, April 25, 2013, 6:00 pm, White River State Park

The sixth annual FDIC Courage and Valor Fun Run will take place at the White River State Park located just a short walk from the Indianapolis Convention Center. The scenic, flat, fast course winds around the canal and provides runners with an absolutely safe (no traffic crossings) opportunity to enjoy a brisk fun run with their fellow firefighters. Timing and management of the run is going to be handled by Tuxedo Brothers for the more serious runners. It’s a chance for everyone to get out and show a commitment to good health and well-being. All proceeds go to help sponsor the Ray Downey Courage and Valor Medal and Award presented each year at FDIC. The awards will be given out at the conclusion of the run. All are welcome to participate. Registration is $20.00 at the convention center Monday and Tuesday of FDIC (outside Hall D) or online at tuxbro.com and $25 on site at the race. All preregistered participants will receive T-shirts.
