Portland (OR) to Apply for FEMA Firefighter Grant

Layoff notices went out to 26 firefighters last month in Portland, but if the city gets a $4.5 million grant, those jobs would be saved, reports KGW.com.

There had been some concern from Portland mayor Charlie Hales on whether any strings were attached, so city leaders were cautious about applying.

After a vote Wednesday morning, commissioners unanimously decided that the city should move forward with the application process.

The Portland Fire Bureau is up against agencies around the country for the money, and if it gets the grant, it would pay for the salaries of the 26 firefighters to be laid off for two years.

It may take until late fall to hear back on whether the bureau receives the grant.
