South Bend (IN) – Police said Monday that Saturday’s playground fire at a South Bend elementary school was set by two brothers ages 5 and 6 and their five-year-old neighbor, who got their hands on a lighter.
South Bend Police Department Captain Phil Trent said the department was finishing up its report Monday and will send it to the prosecutor’s office to decide what to do, since the alleged arsonists are so young.
Police learned the suspects’ names immediately and talked to them right after the fire at Harrison Primary Center.
Mitchell Mace, who lives across the street from the playground, said his three kids use the equipment frequently. Mace described what he saw after his daughter alerted him about the fire.
