Hamel and McCoy Win 2013 DeCamara Scholarships

Each year, the Center for Life Safety Education (CLSE) awards scholarships to two exemplary fire protection engineering students at the University of Maryland in College Park. There have been 29 Philip L. DeCamara, Jr. Memorial Scholarships presented since inception, and this year CLSE is presenting the 30th and 31st scholarships to two outstanding recipients – Catherine (Cara) Hamel and Conor McCoy.  
 
Winner of the $4,000 first place scholarship is Cara Hamel who will be starting her junior year at the University of Maryland with a 3.91 GPA. She is an active member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) student chapter, has performed a life safety analysis evaluation of a building on the university campus using the code laid out in NFPA 101, and during her spare time is part of a team on the Stovetop Fire Undergraduate Research project. 

Second place winner, Conor McCoy, is also entering his junior year of college and has a 3.93 GPA. McCoy considers school his job. He is dedicated to his schoolwork and his work as a volunteer. He says, “I have chosen to make my education my number one priority.”  CLSE is honored to present Conor McCoy a $3,000 scholarship.

Named in memory of a tireless fire sprinkler industry pioneer, the Philip L. DeCamara, Jr. Memorial Scholarship recognizes excellence in academics and leadership. It is administered through the Center for Life Safety Education (CLSE), a nonprofit educational organization recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. CLSE provides college scholarships for degrees in fire protection, continuing education and training for Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and the fire service, and testing and certificate programs for specialties within the fire sprinkler industry.

Funding for the DeCamara Scholarship is provided through the generous donations of leaders in the fire protection profession who recognize importance of educating the industry’s future leaders.
