FL Mayor Riled by Firefighters’ Cruise Excursion

Six Orange County (FL) firefighters used county “pool time” for a three-night Bahamas cruise this month to honor recent retirees, a move that has sparked the ire of the local mayor.

Members used “pool time”–work hours set aside to handle union business–for the outing on Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas, according to the Orlando Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1fnggW6). Based on the firefighters’ hourly pay, the pool time amounted to about $2,600, and may have triggered overtime requests to fill in shifts.

The county contributes 1,500 hours annually toward the firefighter pool of almost 900 union firefighters. Union members also donate an hour each of vacation time to it.
