Layoffs Loom for Omaha (NE) Firefighters

Omaha firefighters were given pink slips Monday as the fire department formally announced layoffs that will go into effect January 4.

The 19 people set to lose their jobs are all probationary firefighters hired in February, according to a report from the World-Herald (http://bit.ly/17K128s).

The mayor and president of the firefighters union say the layoffs are avoidable, but remain at an impasse over the situation. The mayor offered a plan to cut next year’s paramedic training program from 48 to 12 members and avoid layoffs through the end of 2014, in addition to a longer-term deal to avoid layoffs in 2015, but the union is seeking other assurances from the city.
