NY Firefighters Oppose Town’s Plans to Outsource Fire Protection

Elbridge (NY) – The town of Elbridge plans to contract with the Mottville and Jordan fire departments to provide service within the town’s borders after failing to reach an agreement with the village of Elbridge for the service.

Even as the town moves forward with new fire protection contracts, Elbridge firefighters this weekend moved to block the change.

Traveling in department trucks, firefighters for the Elbridge Volunteer Fire Department went door-to-door in the town fire protection district gathering signatures on a petition that asks the town board to hold a referendum to give voters a say in whom to hire to protect them.

Elbridge firefighters collected more than 100 signatures on the petition over the weekend, said Jarrod Smith, the department’s public spokesman.
