The Professional Firefighters of Nevada (PFFN) recently donated over 300 coats to underprivileged children as part of their “Coats for Kids” Campaign, in partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and Operation Warm. This effort provided a large-scale donation of winter coats to children in the community.
Rusty McAllister, president of the PFFN, says, “We believe every child is entitled to dignity, happiness, and warmth, which is why took on this initiative with the IAFF and look forward to implementing it for many years to come.” He goes on, “I would also like to recognize our other community sponsors: The MGM Resorts, Operation Fire HEAT, the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation, and Donna Spear from Reno, Nevada.”
Firefighters in Northern and Southern Nevada hand delivered all coats to underprivileged schools selected. They even held special drop off events at the largest schools in each area including Robert E. Lake Elementary in Las Vegas, as well as Anderson Elementary School and Libby Booth Elementary School in Reno. (Photos attached). All Southern Nevada Schools were selected through Communities for Schools, an organization dedicated to building a community of support for children by embedding resources they need in their school.
Nevada has an alarmingly high number of schools with 100 percent of the students qualifying for free or reduced rate meals. Many families are struggling to provide basic necessities, including proper winter coats, which enable them to participate in outdoor activities, an essential component of a healthy body and mind. This is why the IAFF delegates voted in overwhelming support of the Fire Fighters Coats for Kids Foundation in July of 2012. For more information on the campaign, visit www.pffn.org.
