The Eiler Fire, sparked by lightning, has grown to 5,500 acres and crossed Highway 89 near Hat Creek, reports The Record Searchlight
The fire has had long range spotting and is at zero percent containment.
A wildfire sparked Friday afternoon in the Intermountain area spread across at least 900 acres, forcing evacuations and the brief closure of Highway 89 between Burney and the entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park.
The Eiler Fire, whose containment was undetermined Friday evening, was burning in the Thousand Lakes Wilderness area of Lassen National Forest, said Jeff Fontana of the Susanville Interagency Fire Center.
The closure’s northern end was later reduced to Doty Loop Road and Highway 89. Evacuations remained in place for homes between Doty Loop Road and Highway 44, although initially officials called for evacuations as far north as Cassel.
Evacuees were being sent to a shelter at Fall River High School.
The Eiler Fire originally was reported as two fires in the area that grew toward Highway 89, Fontana said.
