Bayonne (NJ) – A fire that sparked inside a Bayonne apartment complex yesterday morning left four people temporarily displaced and another resident in the hospital after she suffered a heart attack during the incident, neighbors said.
At 9:57 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the fire at a four-story apartment complex managed by the Bayonne Housing Authority at 44 East 50th Street, according to Bayonne Fire Chief Greg Rogers.
Residents said an older woman, who lives in a different apartment unit than the one where the fire started, had a heart attack during the excitement. Bayonne Medical Center spokeswoman Allyson Miller said the woman was in stable condition yesterday, though she was still in the emergency room having tests done.
The fire, which started in a bedroom in apartment 151, was under control by 10:19 a.m., Rogers said. When firefighters got to the bedroom, a mattress inside was burning and fire was traveling up a wall, he added.
