An investigation was underway Monday into the discovery of a burned body that was found after a fire broke out at a middle school in Northridge, reports KTLA 5.
Fire crews responded to an emergency call regarding a rubbish fire at Alfred Bernhard Nobel Middle School in the 19300 block of Lassen Street just before 7 a.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department Spokesman Peter Sanders.
The body was discovered in a brush area on school property after firefighters doused a fire that burned a number of trees and spread to some nearby rubbish, Sanders said during a news conference.
Due to extensive burns on the body, officials were unable to immediately determine the age or gender, Sanders said.
Police had not received any missing persons reports as of Monday morning, Barry Montgomery of the Los Angeles Police Department said at the news conference. “At this time it is truly an unknown person,” Montgomery said.
