New Haven (CT) – Four men were rescued on Tuesday after being nearly buried following a trench collapsed on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU).
Firefighters responded the scene in Wintergreen Avenue, which is on the Southern Connecticut State University campus.
Two workers were able to get out but two others needed to be extricated.
SCSU officials said the men were trapped up to their waists in loose earth, which collapsed near the West Campus Residential Complex. One was stuck up to his chest. The trench itself was about 6′ deep.
The workers, who were not university employees, were replacing a stretch of corroded stream line when the walls caved in around 9:15 a.m.
Crews kept an eye on gases while rescuing the men, who work for Connecticut Boiler Repair out of West Hartford. OSHA is looking into whether there were any safety issues.
A fire official said it appeared the dirt removed from the trench was too close to the workers.
