A school and community are rallying behind a beloved South Side teacher who lost home in a fire Tuesday morning, reports Chicago 32 News.
All that remains of Darlene Sheahan’s home are a pile of charred remains after an explosion and fire. Her sister, Chistine Bojda, said the family is devastated by what happened, including the loss of their 3-year-old golden doodle, Molly, who died in the fire.
However, they are grateful for how the community has rallied to their support, including at Sutherland Elementary School where Sheahan is a long-time kindergarten teacher.
City water department crews were working on 107th Place when they hit a gas line. Preliminary indications are the gas traveled into the home through the sewer line and likely ignited when the gas reached the furnace, according to a source at People’s Gas.
