It was a streak no one wanted to see broken — with the death of a two-year-old boy in a fire Sunday night, Mount Airy is experiencing its first tragedy of that type in decades, reports The Mount Airy News.
Before Sunday night’s fatal fire, Mount Airy had built an enviable record that led to the city fire department receiving the national Life Safety Achievement Award for the past two years. It was one of only 143 fire departments across the United States to land that honor in 2014, which was based on performance in 2013.
The criteria for the selection included logging no fire fatalities for the award period or reducing deaths by at least 10 percent, in addition to documenting fire-prevention programs undertaken to help achieve that goal.
While prevention has been a focus of the Mount Airy Police Department in recent years, Sunday’s tragedy highlights the ongoing need for that emphasis.
