A woman was found dead after her apartment caught fire Sunday evening, and her neighbor was seriously burned during a rescue attempt, reports KOMO News.
Fire officials said a man smelled smoke coming from his neighbor’s University Place apartment in the 2300 block of 70th Avenue W. just after 5 p.m. He ran outside and saw smoke and flames coming from his neighbor’s unit, said Battalion Chief Hallie McCurdy of West Pierce Fire & Rescue.
The man kicked in the neighbor’s door, but suffered serious burns in doing so. He was taken to a local hospital, but his condition is not known.
When firefighters arrived on scene, flames were already coming from the stairwell of the building.
Crews were able to douse the fire and then discovered the body of a woman inside. A dog also perished in the blaze.
