Authorities have determined a large fire early Thursday morning that destroyed an apartment building under construction and knocked out power was arson, reports heraldextra.com.
According to Battalion Chief Ryan Peterson of the Orem Fire Department, the fire started in the Sun Canyon Villas apartment building, being built near 420 S. Orem Blvd., at about 3 a.m.
Less than eight hours later, investigators determined the fire was an arson, authorities reported.
The police cruiser belonging to an off-duty Provo Police Department officer was also set on fire shortly before the fire in the apartment building erupted. The cause of that fire is also arson.
Investigators are trying to determine if the two fires are connected, and whether Thursday’s two fires are connected to another fire in the city in mid-December that investigators also labeled as an arson.
According to Rocky Mountain Power, more than 5,000 customers in Orem’s 84058 zip code were originally without power because of the apartment fire. By 7:30 a.m., that number was down to about 1,000 customers, and power was fully restored by 12:30 p.m.
