The Yukon River village of Nulato is being evacuated after a nearby wildfire saw a tenfold growth in size overnight Monday, with other evacuations reported in progress by Interior Alaska fire officials, reports ktuu.com.
Malcolm Evans, an information officer with a joint information center established for Interior wildfires, said the fire near the village of about 240 people about 35 miles west of Galena is burning on about 800 acres as of Tuesday morning. The fire had been reported at 75 acres Monday night.
So far, the fire has not done a lot of damage to the structures in the fire.
Tanana Chiefs Conference wrote in a press release that a total of 109 residents had been evacuated from Nulato, to the neighboring communities of Kaltag, Koyukuk and Galena. “Food will be sent out this afternoon via charter to Kaltag as planes are not landing in Nulato,” they wrote.
According to Purinton the evacuees consist of children and the elderly from the village, with most people staying behind to help with the fire efforts.
