Former Police Officer Named Detroit Fire Commissioner

Eric Jones, a former police officer and director of Detroit’s Building Department, was appointed as the city’s new fire commissioner.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Jones, 46, was introudced at a news conference on October 14 at the Detroit Fire Department’s Engine Co. 54 and Ladder No. 26.

The report noted that Jones replaces Edsel Jenkins, who announced his retirement Monday after serving in the Detroit Fire Department for nearly 30 years.

According to the report, Mayor Mike Duggan said that the fire department doesn’t need a top-flight firefighter at the top, but rather a leader with the ability to transform practices within departments.
