Thomas Hobbes, a philosopher of the 1600s, wrote the following: “Hereby it is manifest that, during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war, and such a war as is of every man against every man.” If, as the great Thomas Hobbes said, life is a war of every man against every man, then it is even more important that we, firefighters, and those who support and care for firefighters participate in proving that a meaningful life is really about mitigating that war in some small ways, in individual ways, ways that make life more secure, safer, and satisfying.
