NH Town Seeks Fire Chief

The Town of Swanzey (pop. 7,200) located in southwestern New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region seeks a qualified individual to serve as its next fire chief. Working under the general direction of the Board of Selectmen, the fire chief is responsible for supervising, directing, and managing all administrative and technical aspects of the Swanzey Fire Department.

The Swanzey Fire Department has a 2019 operating budget of roughly $500,000, excluding benefits and capital purchases. The chief oversees all personnel in the department, which is made up of a full-time fire Inspector/captain, a part-time deputy and part-time EMS coordinator, and roughly 35 dedicated, active, and well-trained call firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. Ambulance coverage is provided to the community by DiLuzio Ambulance of Keene on a contracted basis. This “working chief” plays a critical role in responding to the community’s 1,100+ annual fire and medical calls.

Swanzey has three fire stations spread throughout the community, which has an area of 45 square miles and roughly 65 miles of Town maintained roads. The fire chief oversees fleet management for the vehicles, equipment, and apparatus of the department, which includes: rescue vehicles, two engines, a heavy rescue, a tanker, and a ladder truck.

The ideal candidate to join the team in this department head level position will have a bachelor’s degree in fire science, safety, or a closely related field and 10 years of fire or emergency medical service experience, including at least five years in a supervisory position. NH Firefighter Level II, EMT-Advanced, and CDL-B preferred. Equivalent combination of skills and experience may be considered. The chief is strongly preferred to live within approximately 15 miles of the town border or be able to move to do so within six months. Desired skills in the next chief include proven written and oral communication skills, computer skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to lead a team to accomplish both short-term and long-term goals. Experience working in a combined call and full time department is ideal.

Salary range for this full-time position is $70,700 to $88,300 and includes a competitive benefit package.
