PRINCETON, Maine (AP) — A man and a deer were rescued from the icy waters of a Maine lake after the man fell into the water trying to save the struggling deer.
Rick Crowe, 63, of Princeton, was attempting to help a deer that had fallen through the ice of Long Lake in Princeton when his canoe overturned, the Maine Warden Service said. Crowe’s wife Tina immediately called a game warden after the Monday morning incident, the service said.
Rescuers got Crowe to a hospital. He was conscious but hypothermic, the warden service said. A warden and two others also retrieved the canoe and brought the deer to shore, the service said.
Game wardens said residents should always check the thickness of ice before attempting any activity on it.
