Forty Firefighters, helicopter Put Down Brush Fire Near Erie Boulevard

It took about 40 firefighters and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Air 1 helicopter to put out a brush fire near Interstate 690 east and Erie Boulevard East Wednesday afternoon, reports syracuse.com.

East Syracuse firefighters responded to the fire around 1 p.m. behind the Texas Roadhouse at 3143 Erie Blvd E., said August Matt, acting East Syracuse Fire Chief.

The fire extended about a quarter mile west toward Thompson Road, Matt said.

Officials called for back up to help fight the fire: four East Syracuse fire trucks, two DeWitt fire trucks, one from Lyncourt and one from Mattydale. Air 1 also dropped about six buckets of water on the fire.

“It’s unconventional for us to have them (the helicopter) come here but it was very beneficial. There’s places that we couldn’t get to right away,” Matt said.

He said the size of the fire, wind, dangerous electrical wires and transporting water from Erie Boulevard to the scene were all issues firefighters had to combat to put out the fire.
