Garfield (NJ) Firefighter Injured by Thrown Bottle

A firefighter suffered an eye injury from broken glass after a bottle was thrown at her fire engine as it raced to a reported fire Friday night, police said.

The 22-year-old volunteer firefighter was seated in the rear passenger compartment of the fire truck as it responded to a call of a fire at a department store on Passaic Avenue, police Capt. Darren Sucorowski said in a statement.

As Engine No. 2 drove along Palisade Avenue between Monroe and Commerce streets, someone heaved a bottle at the passing fire truck, breaking a rear window.

The firefighter was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center and released.

Sucorowski said a group of teenagers was spotted sprinting up Palisade Avenue shortly after the woman was injured.

Police ask anyone with information to call 973-478-8500.
